THU., MAY 1 — The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences recognized FRONTLINE, the acclaimed PBS investigative documentary series produced at GBH in Boston, with 10 News & Documentary Emmy Award nominations.

The recognized documentaries investigate critical local, national and global issues, including the chaotic response to the devastating 2023 wildfire in Maui, Hawaii; the changing nature of the American economy and the impact on families; a corruption scandal in Venezuela and what happened to the journalists who helped uncover the truth, and more.

FRONTLINE’s 10 nods include two News Emmy nominations for Documenting Police Use of Force. A collaboration with The Associated Press and the Howard Centers for Investigative Journalism, this 2024 documentary investigated deaths that occurred after police used “less-lethal force.”

Breakdown in Maine, a 2024 documentary produced in partnership with the Portland Press Herald and Maine Public, also received two News Emmy nominations. The joint reporting, borne out of FRONTLINE’s Local Journalism Initiative, examined the 2023 mass shooting in Lewiston, Maine — the deadliest mass shooting in the state’s history — and the missed opportunities to prevent it.

FRONTLINE also received a Documentary Emmy nomination for A Year of War: Israelis and Palestinians, which documented harrowing accounts from those who experienced the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas attack and the ongoing war in Gaza.

The films South Korea’s Adoption Reckoning and China, the U.S. & the Rise of Xi Jinping were also nominated for Documentary Emmy Awards. “These nominations are a testament to our filmmakers, whose ability to marry in-depth, investigative reporting with captivating documentary storytelling creates programming that educates the American public on issues facing our nation and world,” says Raney Aronson-Rath, FRONTLINE’s editor-in-chief and executive producer. “We are honored to see these documentaries be recognized by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, and share this great news with our editorial partners and film teams; with GBH, PBS and CPB; and of course, with our viewers, who support FRONTLINE’s journalism year after year.”
