Coming in April on FRONTLINE

As recently as September, President Obama was pointing to Yemen as a model for the U.S.’s counterterrorism strategy.

But now, the country — which is home to one of Al Qaeda’s most powerful branches — is being torn apart in a violent sectarian conflict led by an anti-American rebel movement known as the Houthis.

Who are the Houthis? What do they want? And what does the fight for control in Yemen mean for the region, the U.S., and the world?

Our reporter, Safa Al Ahmad (pictured above), was one of the few Western journalists on the ground in Yemen as the chaos escalated. She negotiated extremely rare access to the Houthis as they advanced — and we’ll kick off our slate of April documentaries on April 7 with The Fight for Yemen, her stunningly raw, on-the-ground look at how the battle for control of Yemen is tearing the country apart.

One week later: It has been called “Alfred Hitchcock’s lost Holocaust film.” Discovered in a museum vault by FRONTLINE decades ago, and first broadcast by the series in 1985, Memory of the Camps shows the haunting, horrifying footage shot as Allied troops entered the Nazi concentration camps 70 years ago.

Finally, on April 21, in American Terrorist, we’ll partner with ProPublica to revisit the story of David Coleman Headley — who helped plan the deadly 2008 siege on Mumbai.

April 7 | The Fight for Yemen

FRONTLINE and BBC Arabic team up to bring you this special report from inside the war zone — exposing the violent feuds tearing the country apart, the rival anti-American and Al Qaeda aligned forces fighting for control and the dangerous consequences for the region and the world.

April 14 | Memory of the Camps

No one who has seen this documentary can ever forget it. One critic said it has the power “to shake the soul.” With 2015 marking 70 years since the liberation of the Nazi concentration camps, FRONTLINE broadcasts what Allied troops found when they arrived. The footage — which was the subject of the recent HBO documentary Night Will Fall — was shelved until FRONTLINE found and first broadcast it in 1985.

April 21 | American Terrorist

FRONTLINE investigates American-born terrorist David Coleman Headley, who helped plan the deadly 2008 siege on Mumbai.  In collaboration with ProPublica, the film — an updated and expanded version of A Perfect Terrorist — reveals how secret electronic surveillance missed catching the Mumbai plotters, and how Headley planned another Charlie Hebdo-like assault against a Danish newspaper.
