Former Tow Journalism Fellow, FRONTLINE/Newmark Journalism School Fellowship
Shantal was the 2020 Tow Journalism Fellow for the FRONTLINE/Newmark Journalism School Fellowship. She previously worked as a reporter for the Poughkeepsie Journal and the Mid Hudson Times in Newburgh, New York. Her stories on economic development and homelessness in Newburgh won awards from the New York Press Association; and her investigation into the city’s zombie-foreclosure crisis was recognized by the National Newspaper Association. Her work has been featured by City Limits, NOVA Next and Vice. Riley, who is from Montréal, Canada, holds a bachelor’s degree from Marist College, where she focused on journalism and digital media; and a master’s degree from the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism.
